Jakarta, 3rd October 2025 – Indonesia Eximbank Institute projects that plywood (HS Code 4412) export performance will increase in 2025–2026 despite challenges in the global market. In 2025, Export value is estimated to grow 8% year-on-year (yoy), supported by stable demand from major markets such as the United States, China, and Malaysia. This positive trend is projected to continue in 2026 with growth of around 4% yoy, despite constraints in the supply of certified wood raw materials.

Plywood, better known as “triplek” in Indonesia, is processed wood made from layers of veneer bonded together using resin or special glue, resulting in thick, strong, and flexible wood boards. This product is widely used in the furniture, construction, and home interior industries.

Based on the data processed by Indonesia Eximbank Institute, in the first semester of 2025, Indonesian plywood export continues to have a positive performance amid weakening global exports. Export value rose 3.86% ctc, and volume rose 3.45% ctc.

“This achievement is mainly driven by the demand from the United States, as the growth of the Recreational Vehicle (RV) industry has boosted the use of plywood for interior needs,” said Rini Satriani, Executive Specialist at Indonesia Eximbank Institute.

According to the Indonesia Eximbank Institute, the competitiveness of Indonesian plywood exports is relatively stable. Domestic product prices remain competitive in the global market. Currently, Indonesia ranks as the second-largest plywood exporter in the world, competing closely with China, Vietnam, Brazil, and Russia.

In addition, Indonesia's plywood exports have diversified to more than 85 countries, involving more than 400 active exporters. There are around 20 corporate-scale exporters, each recording export sales of more than Rp500 billion per year. Competition in the domestic industry is also quite healthy, as no single player dominates the market.

Another advantage Indonesia has is the availability of abundant timber resources and the internationally recognized SVLK (Timber Legality Verification System) certification. “These factors provide stability to Indonesia's exports even though demand in some countries is weakening,” added Rini.

However, several challenges need to be anticipated. New competitors such as Tanzania and Cameroon are entering the main markets, while the supply of certified timber remains limited due to the high cost of SVLK compliance. Some competitors are also beginning to show bigger export trends, so Indonesia needs to strengthen its position.

Rini emphasized that in the long term, the success of Indonesian plywood exports will greatly depend on efforts to facilitate access to wood certification, maintain production cost efficiency, and increase market penetration through international trade agreements. With these measures, Indonesia has the opportunity to maintain its position as one of the world's leading plywood exporters with sustainable growth.
