Indonesia's export performance of water and non-alcoholic beverages (HS codes 2201-2202) recorded a significant surge in 2024. Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the export value of products in the HS 2201-2202 category reached USD 164.21 million, representing a 34.36% increase compared to the previous year's achievement of USD 122.21 million. Not only in terms of value, export volume also showed solid strengthening. In 2024, the export volume reached 323.55 thousand tons, representing a 27.95% increase from the previous year (year-on-year/yoy).

The Philippines is the largest market with a contribution of 23.61% to total exports in 2024, or equivalent to USD38.77 million, followed by Vietnam (12.76% equivalent to USD20.96 million), Singapore (9.96%, comparable to USD16.35 million), Malaysia (8.57% equivalent to USD14.08 million) and Timor Leste (7.23% equivalent to USD11.87 million).

In the current period, from January to April 2025, the export value reached USD 77.47 million, and the volume reached 143.26 thousand tons, increasing by 73.45% year-over-year (yoy) for value and 71.16% yoy for volume. This achievement marks a significant milestone for the national non-alcoholic beverage sector to continue strengthening its presence in the global market. Increased exports primarily drove the cumulative export growth from January to April 2025 to several major partner countries, including the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Timor-Leste.

"We are optimistic that this positive growth trend will continue in the coming years, driven by strong demand from trading partner countries. Amidst several challenges in the form of competition with other exporting countries, rapid changes in consumer preferences, and uncertain global macroeconomic conditions, opportunities to innovate and expand the export market for water and non-alcoholic beverages remain wide open," said LPEI Senior Economist, Donda Sarah.

Globally, Indonesia is still ranked 31st in the world as an exporter of mineral water products (HS 2201) and 45th for flavored mineral water (HS 2202). The limited mastery of technology and innovation is a challenge that needs to be overcome so that Indonesian products can penetrate the markets of large countries such as China and Japan, which have substantial but untapped market potential.

As a specialized financial institution that aims to promote national export growth, Indonesia Eximbank has expressed its readiness to support exporters in the water and non-alcoholic beverage industries in developing their business capacity for the international market. To date, the institution has provided financing and assistance to various companies in the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sector and the food industry, both to encourage product exports and factory expansion abroad.
