Proud, Jembrana's Cocoa Wins Cacao of Excellence Silver Award 2023

Jakarta, February 18, 2024 – Go Export Village of Jembrana, Bali, represented by the Kerta Semaya Samaniya Cocoa Cooperative (KSS), received the 2023 Cacao of Excellence Silver Award in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on February 8, 2024. This prestigious and honorable award in the cocoa industry recognizes the excellence and quality of cocoa beans from Jembrana, Bali.

The Cacao of Excellence Award aims to spur transformation in the cocoa sector by recognizing excellence, connecting farmers with markets, and promoting innovation and standards.

The Cacao of Excellence Award is organized by the Alliance of Bioversity International and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), with the goal of encouraging the cocoa industry's transformation to continually innovate, create cocoa excellence, and implement sustainable business practices.

A panel of 32 experts, including chocolate makers, sensory evaluation specialists, and cocoa bean experts, evaluated 222 cocoa bean samples from 52 participating countries worldwide such as Africa and the Indian Ocean, Asia-Pacific, Central America and the Caribbean, and South America. After a rigorous evaluation process, the top 50 nominations qualified for the Gold, Silver, and Bronze Awards.

For the Cocoa Go Export Village of Jembrana, this recognition provides visibility for their cocoa work and quality, as well as enhances the value of their efforts in sustainable cocoa farming practices. "We are very proud to receive the Silver Award from the Cacao of Excellence Awards. This achievement reaffirms our commitment to producing high-quality cocoa and contributing to the promotion of sustainable cocoa production," said the Cocoa Go Export Village of Jembrana's mentor, Agung Widiastuti.

Lembaga Pembiayaan Ekspor Indonesia (LPEI) or Indonesia Eximbank, continues to support the Go Export Village program as a mentoring platform to penetrate the global export market. As a Special Mission Vehicle of the Ministry of Finance, LPEI focuses on enhancing the capacity and competence of business actors. LPEI also strives to build a solid export ecosystem, one of which is the Cocoa Go Export Village of Jembrana, Bali.

"LPEI continuously supports the Go Export Village program as a mentoring platform to penetrate the global export market, as part of LPEI's efforts to implement ESG by building a solid and sustainable export ecosystem. LPEI also pays attention to the dual benefits created on the economy, society, and environment from capacity building conducted by business actors in the Go Export Village program," said the Head of Consulting Services Division, Ilham Mustafa.

The Cocoa Go Export Village of Jembrana has been the first Go Export Village to receive guidance from LPEI since 2012. Cocoa farmers in Jembrana receive guidance and training to produce quality cocoa products and penetrate the export market. The Cocoa Go Export Village of Jembrana has been recognized globally as the producer of the world's best fermentation cocoa beans according to the Cacao of Excellence 2017.

Jembrana's cocoa beans have a unique aroma and flavor, with a texture that does not melt easily, making them a leading export commodity. Sustainability and innovation are key to enhancing Jembrana's cocoa production amid high global demand and limited global cocoa supply.

Cocoa Commodity Potential

According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Indonesia is the world's 12th largest exporter of Cocoa and Cocoa Products, controlling 2.29% of the world's export share in 2022 (USD 55.10 billion).

From a global price perspective, cocoa bean prices have reached very high levels. Bloomberg data shows that cocoa bean prices reached USD 5,798 per metric ton in early February 2024, leaving little room for further price increases, even amid limited supply from West Africa. Crop failures in Ivory Coast and Ghana due to bad weather, such as extreme rain, have led to the spread of fungal infections.

"Indonesian cocoa and processed products are competitively positioned due to their good quality taste and non-melting texture, which are highly required in the chocolate processing industry, as well as the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries. For example, the Kerta Semaya Samaniya Cooperative in 2023 successfully exported worth Rp 1.5 billion to destinations in Belgium, France, Italy, and Japan," said Market Intelligence & Lead Chief Specialist LPEI, Rini Satriani.
